Will Fifa investigation ruin England’s chances of hosting 2018 World Cup?

So are we really all that surprised by The Sunday Times’ allegation that 2 of Fifa’s 24 man executive World Cup bid committee have been caught taking cash for bids? In what is already a convoluted bidding process did we really believe that the Footballing Powers That Be were impenetrable to corruption? Not really. However, does this effect our chances of hosting a World Cup in the recent future?

The purist would argue that it shouldn’t do. Just because an English newspaper has uncovered this story it doesn’t mean the whole country should be punished for bringing the truth to light if indeed it is the truth. God help us if it isn’t. And yet somehow you sense that England’s bid ends here, for if the scandal is accurate then the Sunday Times will have single handedly baited an organisation which already regards the English attitude to football as arrogant.

Quite what Fifa do from here remains to be seen. According to Sky Sports, President Sepp Blatter has written to all the members urging them to “refrain from making any public statements on this matter” whilst their ethics committee investigates the situation, but even if Amos Adamu and Reynald Temarii are found to be guilty, what happens with the bidding process remains uncertain.

Whatever the outcome, do not be surprised if the outcome is not be good for England
