Venus crashes out whilst little sis goes through to the semis

Tsvetana Pironkova has sensationally beaten Venus Williams at Wimbledon to progess through the semi-finals for the first time in her career. The Bulgarian, who until this tournament had failed to progress further than the 2nd round at any Grand Slam, beat Venus convincingly 6-2 6-3 as the 5 time former champion looked well out of sorts and struggled to find any consistency throughout the match. Coming into the match few would have expected Pironkova to win despite the fact that she has yet to drop a set in the Championships, but a nervy start from Venus meant that she was able to impose herself early on in the first set. Early in the second Venus broke easily and looked to be targeting Tsvetana's forehand as a way back into the match but wayward shots in the resulting game meant that the advantage was easily lost. Pironkova missed chances to win the match against Venus' serve but kept her head in the next game to pull off this memorable victory.

Meanwhile, Williams' younger sister Serena had no problems in her quarter-final match against Li Na as she cruised to a 7-5 6-3 victory in just under an hour and a half. Serena will now play Petra Kvitova whilst Pironkova is rewarded for her victory with a match against the 21st seed Vera Zvonareva.
