Barclays Premiership Update

Premier League Logo

Chelsea maintained their lead at the top of the Premiership with a 2-0 victory over Wolves at Stamford Bridge thanks to goals from Florent Malouda and substitute Salomon Kalou, but the victory was not as comprehensive as was widely expected as Wolves battled hard throughout the game. Meanwhile, in the battle for second position Arsenal gave Manchester City a footballing lesson following the early dismissal of centre back Dedryck Boyata for a desperate lunge on Marouane Chamakh when through on goal. Following the sending off the Gunners were rarely troubled by City who also lost their captain Carlos Tevez early in the second half due to injury, and goals from Samir Nasri, Alex Song and Nicklas Bendtner sealed the comprehensive victory. At the Britannia Stadium Manchester United suffered another defensive lapse to allow Tuncay to equalise following a great moment of opportunism from Javier Hernandez. However, Utd were not to be denied with a second goal from their young inform striker who was given his second start of the season due to Wayne Rooney’s absence because of injury. A similar situation was evident at Anfield where Liverpool won only their second match of the season against Blackburn Rovers thanks to a much needed goal from Fernando Torres. The Reds were leading thanks to a second goal in as many matches from Greek defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos but were pegged back as a El-Hadji Diouf shot was deflected back into the goal off the face of the hapless Jamie Carragher. Liverpool in Lim-bo as new bidder steps in

And in another twist....Sky Sports reports that Singapore businessman Peter Lim is preparing a bid for Liverpool.

The Anfield board have already accepted an offer from New England Sports Ventures, but current owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett have taken the case to court, arguing that acting chairman Mark Broughton accepted the offer without their permission.

NESV originally outbid Lim, but he is now planning an improved offer. With the prospect of administration looming large, one thing is certain - this is one hell of a huge week at Anfield.

Liverpool deal not guaranteed as Hicks holds on

Just what is going on at Liverpool?

A day after it was announced that Liverpool had accepted a £300 million bid from New England Sports Ventures (NESV), due to be approved this Friday, chairman Mark Brougthon has now said he 'can't promise' the takeover will go through.

The issue lies with current owner Tom Hicks, who opposes the board's decision to accept the bid, arguing that he changed members of the board minutes before they discussed the offer on Tuesday.

All very interesting stuff. It seems as if Liverpool are not out of the woods just yet.

Mascherano May Join Benitez At Inter

Javier Mascherano has hinted that he could join Rafa Benitez at Inter Milan next season.

The Argentinian midfielder is currently on duty in South Africa, where he revealed he is currently learning Italian to relieve the boredom when not training or playing.

And obviously it would be an advantage if you just happened to be looking to move to Italy.

Mascherano - Taxi for one?

"Me to Inter? Ask Benitez. He is the one who knows more," said the Liverpool midfielder.

"Rafa is my teacher. I learned so much from him since I came to play in Europe.

" I am learning Italian, but I don't know anything about Inter. Does Benitez want me? You should ask him as he would know more than me."
Mascherano's agent, Marco Piccioli, has already hinted a move could be close after revealing he has held inital talks with Inter.

Yossi Benayoun To Complete Switch To Chelsea

It appears the first high profile player to leave Anfield is Yossi Benayoun.

The Israel captain has agreed a four year deal (in prinicple) with Chelsea, however the Premier League Champions have yet to agree a fee with Liverpool.

Sources tell me the fee is in the region of £6.5 million. He joined Liverpool for £5 million.

Benayoun scored nine goals last season for Liverpool in 42 appearances.
